Giro d'Italia
The Giro d'Italia is Italy's Grand Tour and one of the three most important stage races in cycling. Raced over three weeks in May, it is loved for its dramatic mountain stages and passionate fans.
History
The Giro was first run in 1909, organised by the sports newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport. Its famous pink leader's jersey — the maglia rosa — takes its colour from the paper's distinctive pink pages.
The race has crowned some of the sport's greatest riders, from Alfredo Binda and Fausto Coppi to Eddy Merckx and Bernard Hinault. Its unpredictable spring weather and brutal climbs in the Dolomites and Alps regularly turn the Giro into the most spectacular Grand Tour of the year.
